The legend says that :
The mother of Confucio saw a qilin when it was pregnant. A little time then, she gave birth to the Confúcio. This is the origin of the proverb:
The Sky grants a son qilin 天降麟兒.
What is exatamente the qilin? Does this animal exist?
We find several descriptions in ancient books:
(1) 禮記 - Qilin, fênix, turtle and dragon are four spiritual creatures 靈獸.
(2) 爾雅釋獸 - qilin: body of deer, ox's tail, a horn.
This one comes from a chapter on animals in an enciclopécia compiled in the beginning of the Dynasty Han.
(3) 說文解字 - 麒 is a benevolent animal. He has the body of a deer, tail of an ox and a horn. 麟 is one 麒 female. Subsequent annotations explain which animal East has a weapon, but it never attacks, being, so, benevolent. He does not tread in the insects, does not crush the grass. Therefore it is an animal of luck. He appears when the world enjoys peace and prosperity, or when a wise man is on the way.
說文解字 is probably the most ancient dictionary compiled in the Dynasty
Han.
(4) 明史 - qilin: four paws measure 9 feet 尺, paws of the female 6 feet, neck 16 feet, with two small horns, ox's tail and body of deer.
This one comes from the Official History of the Dynasty Ming on foreign countries.
The description before the Dynasty Ming was quite different of that in the Dynasty Ming, when Zheng He 鄭和 brought two giraffes of Africa. The emperador was satisfied and said that they were the qilin that were symbolizing the prosperity of his empire.
Today, qilin of bronze or porcelain they are used in practice of the Feng Shui to bring protection to the persons and to release them of the sha qi.

Ele aparece quando o mundo goza de paz e prosperidade, ou quando um sábio está a caminho.
說文解字 é provavelmente o mais antigo dicionário compilado na Dinastia Han.
(4) 明史 - qilin: quatro patas medem 9 pés 尺, patas da fêmea 6 pés, pescoço 16 pés, com dois pequenos chifres, rabo de boi e corpo de veado.
Este vem da História Oficial da Dinastia Ming sobre países estrangeiros.
A descrição antes da Dinastia Ming era bastante diferente daquela na Dinastia Ming, quando Zheng He 鄭和 trouxe duas girafas da África. O emperador ficou satisfeito e disse que elas eram os qilin que simbolizavam a prosperidade de seu império.
Hoje, qilin de bronze ou porcelana são usados na prática do Feng Shui para trazer proteção às pessoas e para livrá-las do sha qi.
